  1. Sukkarieh, H., Akalonu, C., Liles, S.I., Gillon, W.H., and Brooks, J.T. Thickness of Subcutaneous Fat as a Proxy for BMI in Predicting Surgical Site Infection in Non-Ambulatory Patients with Neuromuscular Scoliosis. To be presented at the Scoliosis Research Society Annual Meeting in September 14-17, 2022 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Thickness of subcutaneous Fat (TSF) can provide a more reliable tool/proxy than Body mass Index (BMI) for determining obesity status and hence risk of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) in non-ambulatory patients with Neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) undergoing scoliosis surgery. Higher BMI is associated with higher SSI and/or complications following surgery for NMS. However, these findings are based on BMI measurements that, at best, may be estimations in the NMS population, many of whom are non-ambulatory and suffer from significant contractures that make obtaining a true height/length measurement difficult and inaccurate. TSF is used to predict wound complications after joint arthroplasty however its application in spine deformity has never been explored. The purpose of this study is to identify the best location to measure TSF in the NMS population and to correlate TSF to SSIs after posterior spinal fusions (PSF). Charts were reviewed of all non-ambulatory patients (ages 8 to 24 years) with NMS who required PSF at a single institution. Patients with inadequate radiographs were excluded along with patients treated with growing rod instrumentation. 15 radiographic measurements and 9 ratios of these measurements were chosen to best represent TSF (Figure 1). Measurements were obtained via preoperative AP pelvis and lateral spine radiographs. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated.  BMI percentile % was calculated using the “BMI Percentile Calculator for Child and Teen” provided by the Centers for Disease Control. Data for SSI was collected. Certain radiographic measures could act as a reliable proxy for BMI in non-ambulatory patients with NMS undergoing scoliosis surgery.

  5. Firouzabadi, A.D., Chelf, S., Davis, R.E., Bass, M.A, Ford, M.A., Leo, J.T., and Nahar, V.K. “Knowledge of Osteoporosis and Health Beliefs among Middle-Aged Men and Women in the Southern United States.” Mississippi Public Health Association, Annual Conference, Flowood, MS, April, 2022.

This study evaluates the knowledge and health beliefs surrounding osteoporosis in a population of males and females 35-50 years old to determine sex-based differences in osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs and to assess the correlation between perceptions and health motivation. Males and females 35-50 years old perceive themselves to have a low susceptibility to osteoporosis. They do not consider osteoporosis a serious disease and have little motivation to mitigate its inception or progression. Their perceptions show that barriers to exercise impact health motivation more than the perceived benefits of exercise.

  7. Nair, V.B., Wilkerson, A.H, Davis, R.E., Sharma, M., Quadri, S.S.A., Samuel, K.D., and Nahar, V.K. “Testing Multi-theory Model (MTM) in Predicting Initiation and Sustenance of Adequate Sleep Behavior among Medical College Students.” Mississippi Public Health Association, Annual Conference, Flowood, MS, April, 2022.

This study aimed to assess how effective the multi-theory model (MTM) is at predicting the initiation and maintenance of optimal sleep behavior in medical college students. MTM constructs of participatory dialogue and behavioral confidence were statistically significant and explained 44.4% of the variance in the initiation of adequate sleep behavior change among individuals not currently engaging in adequate sleep behavior. Emotional transformation, practice for change, and changes in the social environment were statistically significant predictors of sustenance of adequate sleep behavior change and accounted for 38.6 % of the variance. The MTM appears to be a robust theoretical foundation for developing behavior modification interventions aimed at improving sleep quality among medical students.

  1. Intranasal Insulin Decreases Persistent Neuronal Degeneration Following Neonatal Hypoxia-ischemia In Juvenile Rats. Dankhara, N., Lee, J.W., Ojeda, N., Lu, S., White, E.L., Glendye, C., Pang, Y., Bhatt, A. J., Fan, L. Presented February 11, 2022 at the Southern Society of Pediatric Research.

Despite advances in care including therapeutic hypothermia treatment, HIE still remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the newborn population. Our lab has shown that following administration of Intranasal insulin (InInsulin) in P10 rat model of HIE, insulin rapidly distributes in the brain and reduces HI-induced long-term sensorimotor disturbances as well as short and long-term memory abnormality. InInsulin provides long-lasting protective effects against neonatal (P10) hippocampal neuronal injury in juvenile rats. InInsulin has the potential to be a promising non-invasive therapy to improve outcomes of term newborns with HIE.

  2. Pearlman, R.L., Black, W.H., Davis, R.E., Ford, M.A., Brodell, R.T., & Nahar, V.K. “Sunscreen Awareness, Attitudes, and Practices in Patients with History of Keratinocyte Carcinoma: A Single-Institution Survey Study.” American College of Mohs Surgery, Annual Meeting, Philadelphia, PA, May, 2022.

Keratinocyte carcinomas (KCs) are the most common malignant neoplasms in the United States. Sun protection measures including sunscreen use have been shown to reduce the risk of developing KCs. This study found that a large proportion of patients with history of KC do not regularly use sunscreen before sun exposure and younger, female patients are the most reliable users. Increasing contact with dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons is associated with higher sunscreen use. For this reason, dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons play an important role in educating patients on skin cancer risk mitigation strategies.
